THON Dancers to Be Sent off With Dinner and Hair Auction Event
The 2014 Penn State DuBois THON Dancers, Evan Aravich and Jessica Metzger, will be sent off to this year's 46 hour dance marathon with a landmark event. The Penn State DuBois THON Dancer Send Off is open to the public, and will feature a dinner and hair auction, in which three people will have their hair cut by individuals who bid on the chance to do the clipping.
This year's THON Hair Auction will be unique because one of the three volunteers going under the clippers will be Steve Bearfield. Bearfield helped to start the tradition of the hair auction when he was a student on campus in the spring of 2001, and will return to sit in the barber's chair once again in order to support THON.
Aravich and Metzger were chosen to represent Penn State DuBois at THON this year as the designated campus dancers. The honor will place the pair in the middle of the action at the Bryce Jordan Center at University Park during THON 2014. They'll attempt to dance and stay on their feet for 46 consecutive hours.
THON 2014 will take place from February 21-23. The largest student-run philanthropy in the world, THON raised a record $12,374,034 last year. All proceeds directly benefit the Four Diamonds Fund, an organization dedicated to battling childhood cancer. Students from across all of Penn State work in numerous ways to raise money for the cause, holding the 46 hour dance marathon at the end of a long fundraising season. The Penn State DuBois THON Committee supports the university-wide efforts of THON by holding can drives, hair auctions, and a number of other fundraising activities.
The Penn State DuBois THON Dancer Send Off is planned for Thursday, February 20, in the Hiller Building Student Union. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for campus students, $15 for single non-students, and $25 for a non-student couple.
