At Penn State DuBois, an adult learner is defined as one whom:

  • Is 24 years of age or older
  • Graduated from high school five of more years ago
  • Is a Veteran of the armed services, or active duty service member returning to school after four or more years of military service
  • Holds adult responsibilities such as caring for one's children or aging parents

About returning to the classroom

Adult students may start in a certificate program, in a degree program, or as a student taking one class at a time.  Courses are offered during the day, evening, and on-line.  Penn State DuBois offers all of these opportunities for students.

Adult students often enter the college environment anxious and uncertain about their ability to succeed and compete successfully with traditional students.  Current research tells us that adult students are typically more successful than younger students because of their maturity and the experience that they bring to the classroom. Adults show high levels of motivation, more specific occupational goals, and an uncompromising desire to get the most education possible for their investment of time and money.  Penn State Dubois provides a variety of services, resources, and activities to help adult learners be successful in their college experience.
